Dreger: 12 NHLers suffering from concussion like symptoms

An even dozen players are suffering from concussions, or concussion like symptoms - according to an NHL on TSN survey of NHL teams.

Unrestricted free agent Paul Kariya, who is sitting out this season due to the lingering effects of post-concussion syndrome, pushes the total to 13.

Noteworthy is the diverse nature in which players have been injured.

Buffalo's Jason Pominville's head violently hit the glass after he was blindsided by Chicago defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson.  Hjalmarsson received a two-game suspension for the hit. Pominville is listed as "day to day."

Atlanta Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec was concussed in a game last week. Shockingly, Pavelec collapsed, hit his head on the ice and remained unconscious until coming to in the ambulance en route to the hospital.

The 23-year old is still undergoing testing this week to determine the cause of his fainting spell and won't be cleared to return to play until testing is complete.

Calgary Flames enforcer Raitis Ivanans is inching closer to returning to the ice after an opening night fight with Edmonton's Steve MacIntyre.  The 6'5 MacIntyre buckled Ivanans with a series of punches and left him dazed from the obvious head trauma.

Pominville, Pavelec and Ivanans are expected to return in the coming days.

Minnesota's Pierre-Marc Bouchard is also skating again in non-contact drills, and improving to a point where the Wild are hopeful of his return, perhaps, in early November. Bouchard missed all but one game last season.

Boston's Marc Savard is also on the mend. The Bruins say Savard has been riding the stationary bike and doing low impact weights and is progressing toward an exertion test in the next week or two.

Savard, of course, was leveled by Matt Cooke last year - a hit that led directly to the new rule forbidding blindside hits.

And finally, as though on-ice dangers like that aren't enough, Vancouver Canucks prospect Yann Sauve suffered a concussion when hit by a car in downtown Vancouver prior to training camp. Sauve suffered a concussion and multiple abrasions and remains on the sidelines with the Canucks AHL team, the Manitoba Moose.
