Dreger: Cloud of darkness hovers over Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames say there's no infighting plaguing the organization.

There's no poisonous personalities inside the dressing room dragging the group down and the animosity that allegedly once existed between brothers Darryl and Brent Sutter is, according to those close to the team, non-existent.

And, there is no plan to trade Jarome Iginla.

Not happening.

It's all quiet on the trade front.

However, there is a cloud of darkness that hovers over this team; a sense of doom and gloom Flames management says is up to the players to address.

This team is described as being fragile, lacking confidence and focus; all disturbing flaws that surfaced in Saturdays 7-2 loss to the Washington Capitals.

Calgary took dumb penalties, including a too many men on the ice minor and a tripping penalty that led to Alexander Ovechkin scoring two goals in 12 seconds on the power-play in the 2nd period, erasing Calgary's early 2-0 lead.

The Flames gave up 18 scoring chances to the Caps while Miikka Kiprusoff was charted as making 9 big saves even though he gave up six goals.

Left in for the rout, the veteran goalie was embarrassed, both for himself, and his team.

Everyone is struggling and because of this, holding teammates accountable is difficult.

There is no quick fix, and one or two wins isn't going to right the ship.

Brent Sutter and his staff will continue to preach hard work and commitment, but until the players fully buy in, the dark cloud hanging over Calgary isn't going anywhere.
