Calling All Arms: Pierce the centrepiece of Bombers organization

When you phone the Blue Bombers' front office, you will hear the familiar voice of Buck Pierce.

That's because the Blue and Gold have made Pierce the centerpiece of their organization. Pierce (New Mexico State; seventh-year in the league, second with the team) has done everything he possibly could to overcome the devastating injury to his throwing arm he suffered last season against Saskatchewan. I'll bet you if the Bombers asked him to sweep the floors and take out the trash, Pierce would not even hesitate. He's the real deal when he's healthy and the team will go as far as Pierce goes.

Joey Elliott (Purdue, 2nd season) has garnished praise and kudos this training camp as he's emerging as the back up to Buck. Alex Brink, (Washington State, 2nd season) who's coming off a broken collarbone suffered last season against Toronto, and Justin Goltz (Occidental, free agent signing last October) will get meaningful reps in Montreal to fight for that No. 3 slot behind Pierce and Elliott.

Pierce will be staying home, providing quality reps for head coach Paul LaPolice to evaluate Elliott as the backup and for Brink and Goltz to sling it out for No. 3. This is a small window of opportunity and the aspiring QBs will have to make the most of it as Pierce will be playing at least a half, maybe even three quarters of football in the second and last preseason game next week at Canad Inns Stadium aganist the Argos.

Bottom Line: Pierce looks great and is poised to lead the Bombers; Elliott has seized the backup role (for now), and the battle for No. 3 will be in full effect in Montreal this Thursday. You can catch that game on TSN as we have expanded our coverage this season to include seven of the eight preseason games.
