Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken bone in his back when he was hit by Seattle Seahawks pass rusher Cliff Avril on Thursday night.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett announced the injury on Saturday, but said Romo is day-to-day. He did not, however, did not give a timetable for Romo's return.

NBC's ProFootball Talk reports Romo will miss 6-10 weeks with the injury, leaving rookie quarterback Dak Prescott as the team's starter.

Romo suffered the injury in the first quarter of Thursday night's preseason game and did not return. He said after the contest he planned to return but was held out by coaches.

The 36-year-old has undergone two back surgeries during his career and gave up golfing as a preventative measure. Romo played in just four games last season due to a broken collarbone.

Prescott, a fourth-round pick in May, owns five touchdowns to no interceptions in three preseason games. He has completed 39 of 50 attempts for 454 yards.

Kellen Moore, Romo's backup, broke his leg in training camp to send Prescott up the depth chart.

The Cowboys open the season in 15 days, on September 11, against the New York Giants.
