SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. - Edmonton's Heather Nedohin defeated Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones 5-2 on Wednesday at the $370,000 Sun Life Financial Players' Championship curling tournament.
Nedohin (1-2) scored two in the second end and added two more in the fifth to lead 4-1. She scored another in the sixth before Jones (1-2) made it 5-2 with one in the seventh but could get no closer.
Sherry Middaugh (2-1) of Coldwater, Ont., lost 6-5 to Cathy Overton-Clapham (3-0) of Winnipeg in her match, missing a runback for the win in the final end.
Middaugh opened with two points in the first end, but Overton-Clapham fought back, with the critical turning point being a steal of two when Middaugh missed a double in the fifth end.
In the other women's match, Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni stole the extra end to win 7-6 over Chelsea Carey of Morden, Man.
The men's side of the tournament got underway with Brad Gushue of St. John's, N.L., defeating James Grattan of Oromocto, N.B., by a 4-1 score.
