Stefanie Lawton defeated Rachel Homan by a score of 6-4 in the final of the Manitoba Lotteries Women's Curling Classic. The rink from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan received $15,000 in prize money for their victory at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
A key moment in the game came in the fourth end with Lawton holding a 3-1 lead and Homan with hammer.
"We kinda dodged a bullet there", stated Lawton. "Rachel had a shot for 1 or 2 and didn't quite make it."
Homan's miss resulted in a steal and a comfortable 4-1 lead for Lawton.
"We were fortunate to come away with points in that end.", said Lawton.
The remainder of the game saw Homan play aggressively to either score big with hammer or steal points to overcome the deficit. Homan did close the gap, but her comeback bid fell a bit short.
Team Homan received $10,000 for their second place finish.
This game marked the second time Homan has made it to a Grand Slam final this year. Her other appearance had her losing to Sherry Middaugh at the Autumn Gold Curling Classic in Calgary, Alberta.
Homan defeated Calgary's Cheryl Bernard and Winnipeg's Barb Spencer in the playoffs on her way to the final.
Lawton beat Edmonton's Laura Crocker and Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink in the playoffs on her way to the final.
