FREDERICTON - Canada's Robert Desjardins and Isabelle Neron defeated Russia's Alexey Kamnev and Yana Nekrasova 8-4 on Wednesday at the world mixed doubles curling championship.

The duo from Saguenay, Que., improved to 3-3 and remained in playoff contention with the victory at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

"Yes, it's a relief," Neron said. "But we've been saying, `Let's stop putting pressure on ourselves. Just make shots and have fun out there.' And I think we had a lot more fun today."

Canada is in fifth place in its nine-team pool. Eight of the 27 teams will make the playoffs.

The tournament is being held in conjunction with the world seniors curling championships.

Canada's Rob Armitage (5-0) will play Denmark's Bent Juul Kristoffersen (5-2) on Wednesday night. Cathy King's Canadian women's team had the day off.
