Manitoba's Calvert perfect at junior curling championship

LIVERPOOL, N.S. -- Manitoba's Braden Calvert is 2-0 at the Canadian Junior curling championship after downing Nunavut's Jamie Airut 18-4, and doubling up Quebec's Adam Freilich 6-3 on Saturday.

Calvert sits atop Pool A standings along with Ontario's Ryan McCrady, who beat Saskatchean's Tyler Hartung 10-5 and Nunavut 11-1.

Northern Ontario's Tanner Horgan is at 1-0 after stealing two in the 10th end to defeat Quebec, 7-5 in his only game of the day.

In Pool B, Alberta's Carter Lautner and New Brunswick's Rene Comeau also stand at 2-0. Alberta won its opener, 8-2 over Matthew Miller of the Northwest Territories, then posted a 5-1 decision over British Columbia's Cameron de Jong.

New Brunswick took two in the 10th end in its first game to nip host Nova Scotia's Robert Mayhew 8-7, before defeating Prince Edward Island's Kyle Holland 12-7.

Yukon's Joe Wallingham won his only game, 6-4 over British Columbia in Pool B as well.

On the women's side, Ontario's Molly Greenwood and host Nova Scotia, skipped by 15-year-old Mary Fay, sit atop Pool B with 2-0 records.

Ontario eked out a 12-11 shootout victory over New Brunswick's Jessica Daigle before handily winning its evening game, 8-1 over PEI's Veronica Smith.

Nova Scotia pounded Sarah Hill of Newfoundland/Labrador 10-2 in its opener before besting Manitoba's Meaghan Brezden 5-3 in the evening draw. Also in Pool B, Northern Ontario's Krysta Burns won its only contest, 10-6 over New Brunswick.

In Pool A, B.C.'s Kalia Van Osch is alone with a 2-0 mark after victories over Nunavut's Sadie Pinksen 19-0 and Quebec's Camille Boisvert 6-3.

Alberta's Kelsey Rocque and the Northwest Territories' Carina McKay-Saturnino are both 1-0. Alberta defeated Quebec, 6-4, while Northwest Territories scored a 9-7 decision over Saskatchewan's Kristen Streifel.
