ADELAIDE, Australia -- Italian cyclist Giovanni Visconti needed surgery to repair a compound fracture of his right leg after a crash during Sunday's prelude to the Tour Down Under.
Visconti, a three-time Italian national road champion who rides for the Movistar team, was one of several riders who crashed on the sixth of 25 laps of a street circuit in downtown Adelaide during the 50-kilometre (31-mile) race. He is expected to remain in the hospital for three to four days.
Visconti is the second high-profile rider to be injured in the leadup to the Australian stage race, which is the first event of the 2014 ProTour. Thomas Voeckler of France broke his collarbone when he collided with a car during a training ride on Wednesday.
