NEW DELHI - Veteran Leander Paes had a rare doubles defeat in the Davis Cup on Saturday as India conceded a 2-1 lead to the Czech Republic in their World Group playoff.

Radek Stepanek and Adam Pavlasek beat favourites Paes and Rohan Bopanna 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

It was only the second Davis Cup doubles loss in 15 years for the 42-year-old Paes. His previous defeat — also with Bopanna — was against Uzbekistan in 2012.

Paes won the US Open mixed doubles title earlier this month with Martina Hingis and has eight doubles and nine mixed doubles titles in Grand Slam tournaments.

In the reverse singles on Sunday, India's Yuki Bhambri plays Jiri Vesely and Somdev Devvarman takes on Lukas Rosol.
