The 23-year-old defender has joined Southampton on loan from Queens Park Rangers with a view to a permanent £8 million deal.
The deal comes at an opportune time for Ronald Koeman's club, a team desperate for back-line reinforcement. With right back Nathaniel Clyne already sold to Liverpool, Belgian international Toby Alderweireld, on loan at Southampton from Atletico Madrid last season, rejected the chance to make his deal permanent and signed with Spurs.
Florin Gardos, set to be a beneficiary of Alderweireld's departure with more playing time coming his way, incurred a serious knee injury last week. The Romanian international is set to spend seven months on the sidelines.
Koeman was also rebuffed in his attempts to take defender Calum Chambers on loan from Arsenal. Chambers signed from Southampton a season ago.
Caulker signed for QPR a summer ago, following one season at Cardiff City, where he was the club's record signing. The West London native came up through the Tottenham youth system.
Caulker made 35 appearances for the relegated Hoops last season scoring once. He has been capped once by England, scoring in his lone appearance
