Kimi Raikkonen’s future at Ferrari could be coming to an end. According to Germany’s Bild newspaper, Ferrari has launched a bid to secure the services of Williams Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas.

The report stated that Ferrari has made an offer to both Bottas and his current team. Williams has a contractual option on Bottas for the 2016 season, and wants to keep the talented Finnish- born driver for the following season.

Raikkonen had his worst weekend of the season in Austria, lining up 18th before crashing out with McLaren Honda driver Fernando Alonoso. The Finn is under-performing so far this season, sitting 48 points back of teammate Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings.

Raikkonen has been on the hot seat with Ferrari team boss Maurizio Arrivabene, and responded angrily to reporters’ questions when asked if he would have to take a pay cut to stay with the team.

“You don’t know the contract but you write stuff. You write stuff that’s not true,” Raikkonen told reporters. “Maybe you should start writing some things that make sense.”

According to the report in Bild, Ferrari is offering to pay Williams F1 $4.48 million dollars to release the 25-year-old. Deputy boss Claire Williams is demanding more, and a counter-offer could reach as much as $16.7 million.

Bottas has been great his past two years at Williams, finishing in the points 19 of his last 26 races. He recorded three podium finishes in 2014, and had a third-place finish in Montreal this season.

Nico Hulkenberg, who currently races for Force India and is coming off a brilliant win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, is rumoured to be the main contender for Bottas’s seat if he departs for Ferrari.
