Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson has been named a finalist for American League Most Valuable Player.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America announced all the finalists for MLB awards on Tuesday night.

Donaldson, 29, excelled in his first season with the American League East champions, hitting .297 with a career-high 41 home runs. His 123 runs batted in led the league, as did his 122 runs and his 323 total bases.

The native of Pensacola, Florida has already claimed a pair of honours this offseason. Donaldson was named the 2015 AL recipient of the Hank Aaron Award given to the top hitter in the league, as voted by members of the media and fans. Donaldson became the third Jay to claim the award following Carlos Delgado (2000) and Jose Bautista (2010 and 2011). On Monday, the two-time All-Star won two MLB Players Choice Awards, claiming both the AL Outstanding Player Award and the Player of the Year Award.

Etobicoke, Ontario's Joey Votto was named a finalist for the National League MVP. The Cincinnati Reds first baseman won the award in 2010.

The American League MVP will be announced on November 19.
