TSN Scout Craig Button:
Nathan has a burning desire to make a difference in the game and more times than not, he's successful. His skating is excellent with first-step quickness that is exceptional, which allows him to beat defenders and create opportunities in a flash. He has great hands and is able to maneuver the puck in the tight areas. His shot is quick and accurate and he doesn't allow goalies to get a read on it. He is forceful and at times may be inclined to shoot first rather than consider passing options but his playmaking is very good. He is a single-minded player as well as being 'no nonsense' in his approach. His determination along with his skill allows him to impact the game and to do so at the most important times as evidenced in the Ivan Hlinka Gold Medal game and also the Memorial Cup Championship game. An elite number one centre.

Seth has the rare combination of skill, size and power, which allows him to impact the game in multiple ways and in any situation. He is smart and can respond to the various challenges he is confronted with by understanding what his options are and then being able to carry them out. He is blessed with great athletic ability and he moves about the ice with ease and the ability to use his skating to his advantage either defensively or offensively. He understands how to use his advantages to gain the upper hand and whether it is a skill situation or a physical situation, he is able to do it a forceful manner. He is an excellent passer who remains composed under pressure and he has a heavy shot, which poses considerable challenges for goalies. The word that comes to mind when you watch him is: unique. He has all the makings of being a cornerstone defenceman.

TSN Scout Craig Button:
Jonathan has exceptional intelligence on the ice and it takes his level of play to unprecedented heights. It's one thing to be aware, it's another to have great vision. He takes those elements and anticipates what is going to unfold and then makes plays that are of a highly productive nature. He is always probing for the weakness in a defence and when he finds it, he's lightning quick to exploit it. Great hands and he can make all manner of plays with the puck in traffic and in tight areas. Very good skater with quickness, agility and excellent balance and he's a very hard player to knock off course. He's involved in all of the heavy and critical areas and he has a burning desire to excel and make things happen. He can play any situation in the game and he does so with a full comprehension of what each one requires. He is that player who beats up opponents with his skill, his mind and his competitiveness.

4. Aleksander Barkov

Aleksander Barkov
Profile
2012-13 Team: Tappara League: FIN
Position: Centre Height: 6'2"
DOB: Sep. 2, 1995 Weight: 205 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Tappara 53 21 27 48 +18
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Aleksander is mature beyond his years and one has to be in the Finnish Elite League at the age of sixteen. That maturity is on full display when he is playing and he's a player who has a quiet confidence in his game. He has uncanny awareness and is a player who is capable of sizing up the play two and three steps ahead and can do things at a very high pace and tempo. He possesses great hands and he can make every kind of pass to create scoring opportunities. With his size and use of his body, it is very difficult for opponents to negate his hands. He's a very good skater who can create time and space for himself in the offensive zone and he plays at a pace that is at or just above the game but doesn't 'race around.' Aleksander embodies the instruction of legendary Coach John Wooden, "Be quick but don't hurry." He is a dangerous offensive player who plays with determination and has a 'go about his business approach.' Has the potential to be an elite number one centre.

Craig Button: No. 4 | NHL CS: No. 1 IS | ISS: No. 5 | The Hockey News: No. 6 | McKeen's: No. 5

5. Elias Lindholm

Elias Lindholm

DOB: Dec. 2, 1994 Weight: 181 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Brynas 48 11 19 30 +1
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Elias is that player who finds himself in the 'guts of the action' in all areas of the game. His game is founded on an intelligence and understanding that is exceptional. He's capable of adapting to any situation with the ability to make the right play regardless of the challenge. They call these types of players; 'a coach's dream.' He is a very good skater who is quick and agile and combined with his IQ, it makes him a very difficult player to play against and try to get an advantage on. He may be more of a playmaker than a shooter but he creates offensive chances. He is involved and he competes everywhere on the ice. He has the ability to make others better and ultimately is a player who helps teams win. A very well rounded centre who will be able to play in all key situations.
Rankings:
Craig Button: No. 9 | NHL CS: No. 3 IS | ISS: No. 7 | The Hockey News: No. 4 | McKeen's: No. 4

6. Valeri Nichushkin

Valeri Nichushkin
Profile
2012-13 Team: Chelyabinsk/Chelmet League: RUS
Position: Left Wing Height: 6'3"
DOB: Mar. 4, 1995 Weight: 196 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Chelyabinsk/Chelmet 42 16 8 24 +16
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Valeri is a blend of power, skill and will. He is an excellent skater who has speed, agility and quickness. He can power past defenders or he can put them on their heels with a burst and change of speed. Combine this with exceptional balance and he becomes a player who is very hard to deter and one you may have to try and limit as opposed to completely stopping. He has very good puck skills and can handle the puck in traffic and can maneuver the puck into positions where he is dangerous. He uses his size to get to the net and to protect the puck in all situations that require it. He has determination and wants the puck in critical situations. Overall, he is a 'handful' for defenders and looks to be a rare player with his high end skill and physical prowess.

7. Sean Monahan

Position: Centre Height: 6'2"
DOB: Oct. 12, 1994 Weight: 187 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Ottawa 58 31 47 78 -18
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Sean is a very well rounded player who has versatility in his game and can play multiple positions and situations and do it extremely well. His skills may not be flashy but they are very good with a mind that is exceptional. His skating is very good but what he does so well is change speeds and keep opponents off balance. He is quick and very difficult to knock awry. He recognizes opportunities very quickly and is able to take full advantage of them. Call it 'opportunistic' if you will but he finds a way to be productive. Very good touch around the net and his shot is accurate and he is deceptive in his approach. He can play on the wing and he can play a defensive role but the beauty of Sean is that he understands what is required of the various positions and roles and doesn't necessarily need to score to contribute to winning. Very balanced and selfless player who performs when it counts.

TPS Turku 52 3 12 15 -7
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Rasmus is a player who takes the initiative. He plays with a confidence and assuredness in his game that allows him to make an impact. He has good offensive skills with an excellent shot and he jumps into the attack and even initiates the attack if he feels it's necessary. He will play physical and is a big man whom if he makes contact, you are fully aware of as an opponent. He doesn't get rattled and his composure should not be mistaken for any type of 'laissez-faire' attitude because when the game becomes challenging and the moments important, he is ready, willing and capable of taking a leading role to make a positive difference. A player who is more than capable of being a top four defenceman.

TSN Scout Craig Button:
Big, strong and competitive and he imposes himself on opponents. Very strong skater with quickness, agility and balance and he uses it very effectively to close on plays defensively and to move play ahead and out of his defensive zone. Has expanded his overall game and especially his offensive game to the point where he is demonstrating the ability of a top minute defenceman who can contribute in all areas. Darnell is a very well rounded and dependable player who plays with a competitive spirit that says 'I'm here to do whatever is necessary to win.' The type who can 'log' lots of important minutes in a game and these are valuable players in the NHL.
