The Top 10

1. Seth Jones

Seth Jones
Profile
2012-13 Team: Portland League: WHL
Position: Defence Height: 6'3"
DOB: Oct. 3, 1994 Weight: 208 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Portland 40 9 27 36 +28
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Seth has the rare combination of skill, size and power which allows him to impact the game in multiple ways and in any conceivable situation. He is blessed with great athletic ability. He moves about the ice with ease and has the ability to use his skating to his advantage either defensively or offensively. He understands how to use his advantages to gain the upper hand and whether it is a skill situation or a physical situation, and when need be, he is able to do it a forceful manner. Remains composed under pressure and he takes charge on the ice in some way and the word that comes to mind when you watch him is, unique. A cornerstone defenseman.

2. Nate MacKinnon

Nathan MacKinnon
Profile
2012-13 Team: Halifax League: QMJHL
Position: Centre Height: 6'0"
DOB: Sep. 1, 1995 Weight: 182 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Halifax 37 26 36 62 +33
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Nate has a burning desire to make a difference in the game and more times than not, he's successful. His skating is excellent with first step quickness that is exceptional which allows him to beat defenders and create opportunities in a flash. He has great hands and is able to maneuver the puck in the tight areas. His shot is quick and accurate and he doesn't allow goalies to get a read on it. He is forceful and at times may be inclined to shoot first but his playmaking is very good. He is single-minded player in his approach and his determination along with his skill allows him to impact the game. A clear cut number one center.

3. Jonathan Drouin

Jonathan Drouin
Profile
2012-13 Team: Halifax League: QMJHL
Position: Left Wing Height: 5'11"
DOB: Mar. 27, 1995 Weight: 185 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Halifax 31 24 38 62 +28
TSN Scout Craig Button:
The foundation of Jonathan's game is built on exceptional intelligence as well as quickness in his hands and feet to execute on his intentions. He has the ability to recognize opportunities and can exploit them quickly. What seemingly looks like an innocent play is anything but when he's on the ice. Very adaptable to the challenges he faces in the game and has a calm, poised 'go about his business' approach. He's dangerous with the puck because he can shoot, pass or beat you one-on-one and there is no easy way to play versus him because he's a multi-faceted threat.

4. Aleksander Barkov

Aleksander Barkov
Profile
2012-13 Team: Tappara League: FIN
Position: Centre Height: 6'2"
DOB: Sep. 2, 1995 Weight: 205 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Tappara 41 18 21 39 +14
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Aleksander is mature beyond his years with a quiet confidence in his game. He has uncanny awareness and is a player who is capable of sizing up the play two and three steps ahead and can therefore do things at a very high pace and tempo. He possesses great hands, and he makes every kind of pass to create scoring chances. A very good skater who can create time and space for himself in the offensive zone. He is a dangerous offensive player who plays with determination and has a 'go about his business approach.' Has the potential to be a top number 1 center.

5. Elias Lindholm

Elias Lindholm
Profile
2012-13 Team: Brynas League: SWE
Position: Centre Height: 5'11"
DOB: Dec. 2, 1994 Weight: 181 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Brynas 40 7 17 24 -2
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Elias' game is founded on an intelligence and understanding that is exceptional. He's capable of adapting to any situation with the ability to make the right play regardless of the challenge. He is a very good skater who is quick and agile, and combined with his IQ, it makes him a very difficult player to play against and try to get an advantage on. He may be more of a playmaker than a shooter but he creates offensive chances. He is involved and he competes everywhere on the ice. He has the ability to make others better and is adaptable having played right wing with Brynas in the Elitserien.

6. Sean Monahan

Sean Monahan
Profile
2012-13 Team: Ottawa League: OHL
Position: Centre Height: 6'2"
DOB: Oct. 12, 1994 Weight: 186 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Ottawa 40 18 36 54 -11
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Sean's skills may not be flashy but they are very good with a mind that is exceptional. His skating is very good but what he does so well is change speeds and keep opponents off balance. He recognizes opportunities very quickly and is able to take full advantage of them. Very good touch around the net with an accurate shot and a deceptive approach. A very consistent player, who makes others around him better. He is a very balanced player who performs when it counts.

7. Rasmus Ristolainen

Rasmus Ristolainen
Profile
2012-13 Team: TPS Turku League: FIN
Position: Defence Height: 6'3"
DOB: Oct. 27, 1994 Weight: 203 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
TPS Turku 39 2 10 12 -4
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Rasmus has very good offensive skills with an excellent shot. He jumps into the attack and even initiates the attack if he feels it's necessary. He will play physical, and if he makes contact, you are fully aware of that as an opponent. When the game becomes challenging and the moments important, he is ready, willing and capable of taking a leading role to make a positive difference. A player who is more than capable of being a top defenceman. The description 'workhorse defenceman' comes to mind when you assess his potential.

8. Hunter Shinkaruk

Hunter Shinkaruk
Profile
2012-13 Team: Medcine Hat League: WHL
Position: C / RW Height: 5'11"
DOB: Oct. 13, 1994 Weight: 174 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Medcine Hat 47 30 32 62 -6
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Hunter is a fast, quick offensive player who is hungry to score. He has boundless enthusiasm and is not deterred in his approach to playing. He will pay a price to score and is always involved in the hard but reward areas in the offensive zone. He possesses quick hands and can beat you in tight. Very good speed, quickness, agility and balance which helps his attacking style in which he can beat defenders one-on-one. Very good awareness and he gets himself unchecked and open at the appropriate times.

9. Nikita Zadorov

Nikita Zadorov
Profile
2012-13 Team: London League: OHL
Position: Defence Height: 6'5"
DOB: Apr. 15, 1995 Weight: 230 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
London 44 3 14 17 +31
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Nikita is a physical specimen who combines it with a very good skill set. Strong, powerful stride which he uses to his advantage defensively to move ahead or offensively to jump into the play. He's physical and will assert himself. When he does, he is capable of stopping opponents 'cold in their tracks.' Has a big shot and it can overwhelm goalies. He has really developed his game in London and is looking increasingly comfortable in all facets of his play. He has 'huge' upside and when you assess his overall game, he may be the type of defenseman, teams will 'step up' to select in the draft.

10. Valeri Nichushkin

Valeri Nichushkin
Profile
2012-13 Team: Chelijabinsk League: RUS
Position: Left Wing Height: 6'4"
DOB: Mar. 4, 1995 Weight: 196 lbs.
2012-13 Statistics
Team GP G A PTS +/-
Chelijabinsk 40 14 8 22 +15
TSN Scout Craig Button:
Valeri is a player who combines a high skill level with a very competitive approach to playing and one that is not averse to playing physical and imposing himself on the opposition. Very good sense and feel. He is capable of driving the net with the puck, making plays with the puck and shooting to score from outside. He's very difficult to handle one-on-one, and when the game gets to its critical junctures, he has both the desire and ability to make a difference. Excellent skater with speed, power, agility and balance and he uses them very well in all instances. Overall, he's the type of winger, NHL teams covet.
