Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski will miss Friday's series opener against the Anaheim Ducks with an upper-body injury.
Rafalski did not practice with the club on Thursday, but Wings head coach Mike Babcock initially said he gave the backliner the day off. However, the 35- year-old was did not attend the pre-game skate on Friday, forcing Babcock to admit the truth, that Rafalski was injured and could not play.
Jonathan Ericsson is slated to take Rafalski's place alongside Nicklas Lidstrom. The injury also created the opportunity for 47-year-old Chris Chelios to see his first action in the 2009 playoffs.
A native of the Detroit suburbs, Rafalski posted 10 goals and 59 points in 78 games during the regular season, adding a goal and two helpers during a first- round sweep of Columbus.
