Five thoughts on George, Butler and more
TSN's Jack Armstrong gives you five thoughts from around the NBA, including Paul George of the Pacers, Jimmy Butler of the Bulls and Nicholas Bathum of the Hornets.
1. PAUL GEORGE (Pacers): Great to have him back playing and he's been terrific averaging 25ppg and 8.5rpg. He makes others better (4.8apg) and is shooting lights out from 3-point range (41%). His presence has settled down their team offensively because he attracts the double team and his teammates get higher percentage shots. Huge difference to have an elite guy. His ability to play a few positions has helped big time.
2. JIMMY BUTLER (Bulls): The Constant. Love how hard he plays on both ends. Has improved as a shooter (39% on 3's) and it opens up his entire game. Disruptive defender who locks in hard on people. High level producer (21ppg) who just keeps coming at you.
3. NICHOLAS BATUM (Hornets): In final year of his contract and is doing a nice job with his new team. Such a skilled guy (46 3-Pt% /8 8% FT) who has a bigger role with this team and is taking advantage with greater production. Sound wing defender. Good fit and solid pickup.
4. ISH SMITH (Pelicans): In the midst of a frustrating injury filled start to their season, New Orleans has had good play from its point guard. Plays with high energy and understands how to set the table for others (7.9apg). I like his hungry attitude and motor. Penetrates and changes speed nicely. Makes the high percentage play and is responsible. A bright spot.
5. KRISTAPS PORZINGIS (Knicks): He's been a blast to watch the past few games. This kid is tough. Love how he seeks out contact. Averaging a double/double (13.2ppg. and 10.4rpg). Gives you nice rim protection (1.5bpg) and is willing to challenge all types of shots. He has good ball skills and his overall game awareness is impressive for a young guy. Truly a diamond in the rough. NY got a guy who is going to just keep getting better. Watch out Atlantic Division. You add a player like him to the mix along with a healthy Carmelo Anthony and a lousy team becomes respectable. They believe after big wins vs OKC and Houston. Impressive.
