While the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing their first game since trading captain Dion Phaneuf, the Calgary Flames are missing several stars of their own.

Flames forwards Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau and Lance Bouma were all healthy scratches against the Leafs.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie the decision was made for disciplinary reasons.

According to the Calgary Herald, Flames head coach Bob Hartley called practice after just 25 minutes on Monday, the morning after the players were given Super Bowl Sunday off.

The Herald also reports “a couple of regulars” in the Flames lineup showed up shortly before the start of practice, but did not name the players, and Hartley declined to comment when asked, stating he wasn't "going to clean his laundry in public."

“He had a little fire there,” Mark Giordano said of Hartley to the Herald. “It sent a clear message that we better be fresh, we better be mentally sharp, ready to go. A good message – clear. We’ll start with clean slate (vs. the Maple Leafs).”

The Flames are expected to play tonight's game with 11 forwards and seven defenceman with Monahan, Gaudreau and Bouma out.

Monahan and Gaudreau, both in their third NHL season, typically play alongside Jiri Hudler on the Flames’ top line. While, Bouma, in his fifth season, has one goal this season while being limited to just 17 games due to injury.
