Jim Schwartz is switching sides.

The former Detroit Lions head coach who was most recently the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator, will work this year as an officiating consultant.

The NFL confirmed Schwartz’s hire on Monday.

Schwartz was head coach in Detroit during two notable rules issues. The first was Calvin Johnson’s complete-the-rule catch in 2010 and the second was Schwartz challenging a scoring play which led to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and eventually, the “Jim Schwartz” rule which allowed coaches to do just that.
