FRANKFURT — Eintracht Frankfurt captain Makoto Hasebe, the Bundesliga's most capped Japanese player, has been ruled out indefinitely with a knee injury that needs an operation on next week.

Frankfurt says the 33-year-old Hasebe was injured against Bayern Munich last weekend when he crashed against the post after clearing the ball. A scan on Thursday found the injury to be worse than initially thought.

Hasebe wanted to play on Saturday against Hamburger SV but had to drop out of training on Friday.

Frankfurt says, "The decision that an operation is unavoidable was made by the sporting management and team doctor."

Hasebe has played in 236 Bundesliga games. He recently overtook Yasuhiko Okudera (234 appearances for Cologne and Werder Bremen in the first division from 1977-86) as the league's most capped Japanese player.
