G2 Esports defeated Unicorns of Love 3-1 in the 2017 European League Championship Series Spring Finals to win a third consecutive split title in Hamburg, Germany.

Game 1 was a chess match in almost every way. Both teams approached each other with caution and refused to commit to a full engage. It was G2’s jungler Kim “Trick” Gang-yun that took advantage of the gameplay with three early kills.

It wasn’t until UoL made an attempt at the Baron that the game really opened up. G2 pounced on their opponents and won a team fight 2-0 before finishing off the Baron. They rolled from that point to a 47-minute victory in the series opener.

The Baron would change fortunes yet again in Game 2. A much more active Game 2 took a major turn after the 20-minute mark when G2 dominated another team fight (3-0) near the Baron and secured the buff again. UoL could not match the strength of G2 and ceded defeat in less than 31 minutes.

UoL responded in Game 3 by going back to the slower pace in Game 3. The battle for gold and objectives played into UoL’s hands despite giving up a few kills. The game was close until the Baron came into play yet again. This time it was UoL that took a five for one team fight and secured the Baron buff. They gained an inhibitor as a result and powered their way to the Nexus before the 40-minute mark.

The fourth and final game was much like the first two with G2 showing off why they lost just one series during the regular season. As with the other three matches, the climax came into the Baron pit where G2 demolished UoL with a five for one team fight. The deficit was too much for UoL and the two-time defending split champions became the three-time defending split champions with a 37-minute win in Game 4.

The win gives G2 qualification to the Mid-Season Invitational beginning on Apr. 28.

On Saturday, Fnatic made quick work of Misfits with a 3-0 series victory to claim third place.
