Phil Mickelson will be looking forward to a good result and a nice paycheque from next month's U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
And a lucky fan will be looking forward to an identical paycheque, courtesy of Callaway Golf.
The golf equipment maker announced a contest on Thursday called "The Big Bertha Payday", where golfers who try out one of the company's new drivers or fairway woods will be able to enter the contest. Callaway will pay the winner an amount identical to the one that Mickelson pockets at the June 12-15 event, up to the winner's prize of $1.5 million.
Last year at the U.S. Open in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, Mickelson finished in a tie for second place and earned $696,104.
Mickelson, 43, is a five-time major champion and needs a U.S. Open title to complete a career Grand Slam.
