HANNOVER, Germany — Hannover substitute Niclas Fuellkrug converted a penalty to earn his side a 1-1 draw against promoted rival Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Friday.

Takuma Asano's first-half strike looked to be enough for Stuttgart to claim its first away win of the season, but Fuellkrug equalized from the spot with a quarter-hour remaining after Benjamin Pavard was adjudged to have brought down Matthias Ostrzolek.

Martin Harnik missed a good chance for the home side before a mistake from Hannover goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner proved costly. Tschauner let Christian Gentner's speculative shot spill forward for Asano to score in the 24th.

Salif Sane came closest for Hannover when he struck the post around the hour-mark before half-time substitute Fuellkrug finally rewarded the home side's perseverance.

The draw keeps Hannover two points ahead of second-division champion Stuttgart in mid-table ahead of the rest of the 13th round.

Borussia Dortmund hosts Schalke for the Ruhr derby on Saturday, before league leader Bayern Munich visits Borussia Moenchengladbach.
