Jim Harbaugh and San Francisco 49ers have decided to part ways after four seasons together.

The two sides mutually decided on Sunday Harbaugh would not return as head coach for the 2015 NFL Season.

The decision was announced within an hour of the 49ers defeating the Arizona Cardinals. The coach has been repeatedly linked to the University of Michigan.

"Jim and I have come to the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interest to move in different directions," 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement.

Harbaugh is just two years removed from a Super Bowl loss against the Baltimore Ravens and led the team to three straight NFC Championship appearances from 2011-2013.

“We accomplished many great things together as a team during this period," Harbaugh added, "which is a tribute to the incredible efforts of some of the most dedicated players and coaches in the NFL. I will miss competing alongside this group of players and coaches, I have the utmost respect and admiration for their hard work and support.

2014 was the 49ers' first season under Harbaugh in which they missed the playoffs since he was hired in 2011.

The 51-year-old leaves the Bay area with a 44-19-1 record.

York concluded the team's statement with a note on the future,  adding the team is now "squarely focused on finding the next head coach of the 49ers."

"With the great leaders and talented players we have in our locker room, we are ready to move into the next chapter of our team’s history," York said.
