The Toronto Argonauts return to action on Wednesday night, looking for a first win at BMO Field.

Three weeks after the archrival Hamilton Tiger-Cats ruined their home opener, the Argos face a familiar foe in former backup/starting quarterback Trevor Harris, who is currently crushing it with the Ottawa Redblacks. Kudos, CFL schedule makers.

Harris took over behind centre in Ottawa after Henry Burris injured his finger in Week 1 and was placed on the six-game injured list. It’s a familiar position for the 30-year-old pivot after filling in for an injured Ricky Ray the majority of last season with the Argos.

It was that cameo that led Harris to his current, big-money deal in Ottawa. Harris finished last year 382 of 538 for 4,354 yards and 33 touchdowns to 19 interceptions. His steady play helped lead the Argos to a playoff berth through a tumultuous season that saw them play home games in four different stadiums.

With Ray recovered from his shoulder injury that robbed him of much of last season, the Argos decided to let Harris walk in free agency, directly into the Redblacks’ waiting arms. He’s arguably been even better since.

Through three games this year, Harris is 76 of 95 for 1,085 yards and nine touchdowns to only one interception, and the Redblacks are undefeated at 2-0-1. The Edinboro University product is an early frontrunner for Most Outstanding Player alongside his favourite target, receiver Chris Williams, who’s benefited from Harris’ insertion into the starting lineup to the tune of 25 receptions for 493 yards and six scores already.

Ray has been no slouch either so far this season, starting 62 of 90 for 751 yards and five touchdowns to one interception, but the 36-year-old veteran has work to do to catch Harris in the QB rankings.

Harris is the second consecutive Argos’ backup to flourish elsewhere after cashing in on a temporary gig filling in for an injured Ray. Zach Collaros turned seven starts and a 5-2 record with Toronto in 2013 into a solid career with the Tiger-Cats after he too jetted as a free agent for more playing time.

It took until Labour Day 2014 for that first edition of mentor vs protégé, with Collaros (27 of 38 for 317 yards and one touchdown) outplaying Ray (16 of 29 for 142 yards and one touchdown to one interception) in a 13-12 Ticats win that day.

Since Ray’s shoulder injury that opened the door for Collaros in 2013, he trails both former backups in winning percentage as a starter, 46.6 to 67.7 (Collaros), and 60.5 (Harris). He’ll have a shot to cut into that lead Wednesday at home.
