TORONTO - A major accident involving eight horses Monday marred the final of the Ontario Boys Pacing Series at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack
The accident occurred on the backstretch when race favourite Warp Speed fell while running third, unseating driver Mario Baillargeon and causing an eight-horse pileup.
Baillargeon was reported to have suffered a broken ankle. Drivers Roger Mayotte and Robert Shepherd were also taken to a local hospital. Standardbred Canada posted on its website that Mayotte reportedly suffered a broken shoulder, while Shepherd had a broken leg.
The website also stated that none of the horses involved in the accident sustained serious injuries.
Windun Twister won the $55,400 event.
