The Carolina Hurricanes are committing long-term to Bill Peters, signing the head coach to a contract extension through the 2018-19 season.

“Bill is a talented, young coach in the National Hockey League,” Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said Wednesday in a release. “We are happy that he has made a commitment to the Hurricanes, and that he will be a major part of the team continuing to grow.”

The 50-year-old was the named the 13th head coach in franchise in June 2014, taking over after Kirk Muller was let go.

Peters guided the Hurricanes to a 30-41-11 in his first year and improved the club to 35-31-16 last season - the second best record of non-playoff teams in the Eastern Conference.

In May, Peters served as head coach of Team Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, where Canada won gold medal from the second straight year.

Peters had previously been under contract through the 2016-17 campaign.
