Goaltender Mike Smith had his first on-ice work with the club since his lower-body injury three weeks ago, according to the Calgary Sun's Wes Gilbertson.
Smith skated with the team Tuesday in Buffalo and called it an encouraging step in his recovery, but does not have an estimated return date.

Ryan McDonagh's Lightning debut won't come against the New York Rangers on Thursday.
The 28-year-old, who was acquired by Tampa Bay at the deadline with J.T. Miller, last played on Feb. 7 while still with the New York Rangers.
Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said Tuesday the team will know more about McDonagh's status towards the end of the week and he could debut at the earliest on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens. Cooper cautioned, however, that McDonagh's debut is more likely to come next week.
McDonagh skated Tuesday wearing a non-contact jersey. He's been dealing with an upper-body injury.
Injured forward Ondrej Palat also skated in non-contact red on Tuesday, although Cooper said he remains without an update. Palat, dealing with a lower-body injury, was given a six-to-eight week timeline on Jan. 22.

Valiev was acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent Tomas Plekanec to the Leafs.
He said after the trade, he was hoping to be moved was excited about the new opportunity. He has yet to appear in a game at the NHL level this season.
“Valiev was doing well with the Marlies, but I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do here," head coach Claude Julien said Tuesday.

Goalie Ben Bishop left Monday's game against the Ottawa Senators early after teammate Dan Hamhuis fell on his leg.
The incident happened in the first period and Bishop stayed in the game but was replaced by backup Kari Lehtonen to start the second period.
Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock said after his team's 3-2 overtime loss Bishop would miss at least the team's next two games.
"With Ben, we’re probably going to need a couple of days to figure out time frame on it, so for sure. He’s not going to play tomorrow and Friday and then let’s just see from there," Hitchcock told the Dallas Morning News.
Bishop has been solid in his first season with the Stars this year, recording a 26-17-4 record with a .916 save percentage and 2.51 goals-against average in 50 games. He stopped all 12 shots he faced before exiting against the Senators
Lehtonen, meanwhile, has been good as well this year. The backup has a 11-6-1 record with a .919 save percentage and 2.29 GAA in 22 games. He allowed three goals on 18 shots on Monday night.
