Jarome Iginla took to the ice on Tuesday for practice with the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins.

The 40-year-old Edmonton native told The Providence Journal's Mark Divver that he would like to resume his hockey career having recuperated from hip surgery four months ago.

"I'd love to still play," Iginla told Divver. "This is kind of the first step, getting out here and seeing how it is. I wanted to see if I can still go. I don't have any deals at this point."

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun notes that Iginla's participation was okayed by the Boston Bruins, Providence's parent club, and comes with no strings attached.

Iginla split last season, his 20th in the NHL, between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. He scored 14 goals and added 13 assists in 80 games with the two clubs.

A 10-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist, Iginla notched 625 goals and 675 assists in 1,554 career games with the Calgary Flames, Pittsburgh Penguins, Bruins, Avalanche and Kings. He is the Flames' all-time leader in games played (1,219), goals (525) and points (1,095). Iginla is 34th on the NHL's all-time points list.
