MONTREAL - Enzo Concina, who played briefly for the Montreal Impact in 1994, was named assistant coach of the Major League Soccer club on Monday.

Concina, 52, was an assistant coach for D.C. United last season. He replaced Nikolaos Kounenakis, who was let go after one season on head coach Frank Klopas' staff.

Concina played 13 seasons as a central defender, mostly in Italy, from 1982 to 1994. A dual Italian-Canadian citizen, he played four times for Canada.

He ended his playing career with 10 games for the Impact in 1994 in the former American Professional Soccer League.

Concina was hired as an assistant coach with Napoli in 2010, helping them to third place in Serie A in 2010-11 and second place the following season. Napoli also won a Coppa Italia and qualified for the round of 16 in the UEFA champions League in 2011-12.

"He brings a wealth of experience with his time in Europe and in MLS with D.C. United," Impact technical director Adam Braz said in a statement. "In regards to Nikos, his contract expired and we mutually agreed that it was the best decision for us to part ways."

Assistant coach Mauro Biello and goalkeeping coach Youssef Dahha remain with the club.

Fitness coach Paolo Pacione has the new title of performance manager, with Vassili Cremanzidis as performance analyst.

The team also named Nicolas Nault as head athletic therapist with the first team, assisted by Rene Seguin-Beaulieu as assistant athletic therapist and Sheehan McBride as assistant athletic therapist and rehabilitation specialist.

The Impact open camp on Friday. They head to Mexico on Feb. 8 to prepare for the opening leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal against Pachuca on Feb. 24 in Mexico. The return leg is March 3 at Olympic Stadium.
