International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach is not convinced that esports will find its way into the Games any time soon.

Attending the Pan American Sports Organization General Assembly on Tuesday, Bach told Olympic news outlet insidethegames that he isn’t completely sold on competitive gaming as a sport.

“We are not yet 100 percent clear whether esports is really sport,” Bach said, “with regard to physical activity and what it needs to be considered sport.”

Bach concerns centre around a lack of governing body and the perceived difficulties of complying with Olympic rules and conditions. However, he would go on to say that the popularity of the industry among the next generation is something that can’t be ingnored.

“I can only give you a very personal remark, but some of these games are contrary to all our values,” he said. ““We are watching it, we see the differences, we see the lack of organization. But we also see the high engagement of youth in esports. Therefore, we have to carefully consider how this could be consolidated.”

Esports has taken the first big step toward the Olympics with its inclusion in the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games. Esports will make its debut at the 2018 Asian Games as a demonstration event and will become a medal sport in 2022.
