Matt Calvert watched the Columbus Blue Jackets' overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins from the press box on Sunday as he served a one-game suspension.

Calvert was disciplined for his cross-check on Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl in the final minute of Game 2, and was barred by the league's Department of Player Safety from playing in the team's first home game of the series.

“I obviously regret the play,” Calvert told the Columbus Dispatch. “I let my teammates down and wasn’t able to help them (in Game 3). It’s what happened. There’s no sense in me commenting on it now. We have to get ready for Game 4.”

Calvert appeared to target Kuhnhackl at the end of Game 2, breaking his stick on a cross-check to the shoulder/upper-back of the unsuspecting Penguins forward and then pushing him to the ground after he doubled over from the hit. Calvert told the Dispatch there was nothing Kuhnhackl had done to lead the Blue Jackets forward to target him specifically.

“Nope, (there was) nothing that led to it,” Calvert said. “A series is a battle and we’re going to be ready to battle (tonight)."

Kuhnhackl gave a similar answer and was also was eager to move past the hit when he was asked on the weekend.

"There were a lot of emotions out there," Kuhnhackl said Saturday. "That was Game 2. Now we're going to focus on Game 3."

Calvert is expected to draw back into the lineup as the Blue Jackets try to keep their season alive in Game 4 Tuesday.
