SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Brad Jacobs and Mike McEwen will meet in the Grand Slam of Curling National final after winning their semifinal draws on Saturday.

Jacobs, the reigning Olympic gold medallist who is playing in front of his home crowd, knocked off Edmonton's Brendan Bottcher 8-2 in six ends to advance to the championship game while Winnipeg's McEwen toppled American Heath McCormick, 5-2.

Bottcher took a 1-0 edge in the first end against Jacobs, but the Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native responded with two in the second, a steal of one in the third and two more in the fourth for a commanding 5-1 lead. Bottcher added one more in the fifth, but Jacobs followed that up with a pick up of three in the sixth to secure victory.

McEwen went up 1-0 over McCormick in the second end and never trailed, adding another point in the third and two more in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. McCormick picked up singles in the sixth and seventh ends to cut McEwen's lead in half, but that was as close as the American would come as McEwen added one more in the eighth.

Jacobs run to the championship match didn't come easy as he had to knock off Winnipeg's Reid Carruthers — who was undefeated through round-robin play — in the quarter-finals just to have a chance.

In quarter-final action earlier in the day, Jacobs doubled up Carruthers 6-3 in seven ends while McEwen edged Saskatoon's Steve Laycock 5-4 after earning a single point in the final end.

McCormick beat Glenn Howard, of Penetanguishene, Ont., 6-5 for his spot in the semis and Bottcher hammered Calgary's John Morris for the right to play Jacobs.

The final goes Sunday.
