Toronto Blue Jays OF Michael Saunders will be shut down for the remainder of the season, manager John Gibbons announced on Tuesday.

Saunders, who was acquired in the off-season from the Seattle Mariners, was injured in a freak accident during Spring Training when he stepped on a sprinkler head.  He was expected to be out until the All-Star break, but after undergoing surgery he made his season debut on April 25th.

The 28-year-old only managed to play nine games, posting a .194 average with three RBIs before discomfort in his knee forced him out of the lineup once again.

The Victoria, BC native was traded to the Jays by the Mariners on December 3rd for starter J.A. Happ.  He was selected in the 11th round of the 2004 MLB Draft.
