WASHINGTON - Defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois agreed to a $9 million, three-year contract with the Washington Redskins that includes $4 million in guaranteed money, according to his agent.

The agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed the details of the deal to The Associated Press on Thursday night.

Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie said he could not confirm Jean-Francois had signed with the team.

The 28-year-old Jean-Francois became a free agent when he was released this week by the Indianapolis Colts in a cost-cutting move.

His move to Washington represents the first significant addition to the Redskins' roster by new general manager Scot McCloughan, who was hired last month by a club coming off its sixth last-place NFC East finish in the past seven seasons.

And there is a connection: McCloughan was the GM of the San Francisco 49ers when they picked Jean-Francois out of LSU in the seventh round of the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman spent four seasons with the 49ers before playing two with the Colts.

The Colts had signed him to a $22 million, four-year contract in 2013, but the club decided to take salary-cap savings of nearly $5 million by cutting ties Monday. He had three sacks and made 13 starts for the Colts last season.

In his six NFL seasons, Jean-Francois has been active for 77 games, making 28 starts and collecting 8 1/2 sacks.

The specifics of Jean-Francois' agreement with the Redskins were first reported by ESPN.
