TORONTO — Kasperi Kapanen scored once and also set up Dmytro Timashov's first pro goal as the Toronto Marlies completed a weekend sweep of the visiting Utica Comets with a 5-2 victory on Sunday in American Hockey League action.

Andreas Johnsson opened the scoring in the first period for the Maple Leafs' AHL club (2-0-0) with his third goal in two games. But Comets (0-2-0) defenceman Jordan Subban responded to make it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes.

Kapanen restored the lead for Toronto early in the second, then fed a cross-ice feed to Timashov as a Utica penalty expired, who put in in from the side of the net for a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Colin Smith and Travis Dermott, with his first as a pro, made it 5-1 for the Marlies before Subban added his second to round out the Comets offence. Kapanen also picked up an assist on Dermott's goal to finish with a three-point outing and has four points in his first two games of the AHL season.

Antoine Bibeau made 19 saves for the win as Thatcher Demko stopped 28-of-33 shots in his first start with the Vancouver Canucks' AHL affiliate.

The Marlies went 2 for 9 on the power play while the Comets scored twice on seven chances with the man advantage.

Toronto also beat Utica 5-2 on Saturday in the season opener for both clubs.
