NEW YORK - Orlando Titans forward Casey Powell was named the National Lacrosse League's MVP on Thursday.

Powell was the Titans' leading scorer during the regular season, setting a career-high in goals with 44 -- second most in the NLL behind Washington's Lewis Ratcliff (46). He also finished the regular season with 36 assists and was tied for fourth in the league on power-play goals at 10.

"I was very surprised," said Powell, who was born in West Carthage, N.Y., making him the first U.S.-born player to win the award, as all previous winners are Canadian. "There's a lot of great players in this league, a lot of players well deserving of this award.

"It was exciting to be part of history as the first professional lacrosse team in Florida, and to have a great fan base. We were definitely motivated by them."

The Titans, who clinched the top seed in the Eastern Division, were defeated Saturday in the second round of the playoffs by the Toronto Rock.

Meanwhile, Stephan Leblanc was named this season's top rookie.

The Rock forward helped his team to a 9-7 record in the regular season with 36 goals and 46 assists for 82 points.

Toronto is set to play against the Washington Stealth in the NLL's Champion's Cup on Saturday night.

"I'm just happy I could get it done this year for my team," said Leblanc. "Having guys like Colin (Doyle) and Blaine (Manning) around helps a lot though. They've been around the block so many times, you can't help but to feed off them."
