Winnipeg Jets superstar rookie Patrik Laine will not play for Finland at the world hockey championships this year, the team announced on Monday.

Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey will suit up for Canada while Andrew CoppJacob Trouba and Connor Hellebuyck will play for the Americans. Nikolaj Ehlers of Denmark will also participate.

Selected second overall last summer, Laine put up 36 goals and 28 assists over 73 games in his rookie campaign and should be in contention with Auston Matthews for the Calder Trophy.

The 18-year-old helped Finland qualify for the world championship gold medal game last year, falling 2-0 to Canada. Laine won gold at the world juniors the year before.

The 2017 men's world hockey championship begins May 5 from France.
