Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Roman Polak will undergo season-ending hernia surgery.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, Polak had been playing with considerable pain for quite some time and decided he needed to get it checked out after Saturday night's blowout loss to the St. Louis Blues. He will rehab in Toronto before heading home for the summer.

The 28-year-old had five goals and four assists over 56 games this season in Toronto, his first year with the club.

Polak was traded to the Leafs over the summer for defenceman Carl Gunnarsson and a draft pick. He has one more season left on his current contract with a cap hit of $3.1 million.

Stephane Robidas was lost Sunday for the season with season-ending shoulder surgery.

The Maple Leafs called up 22-year-old defenceman Petter Granberg from the Toronto Marlies to help fill the void.
