TORONTO — Brandon Whitaker ran for two third-quarter touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-21 on Sunday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Toronto (5-6) captured the rubber match of its three-game season series with Hamilton (5-6), which earned a 49-36 home win Monday. After being outscored 32-6 in the second half on Labour Day, the Argos outscored the visitors 17-1 in the final two quarters for just their second home win before an energetic BMO Field gathering of 17,214 that included Nashville Predators defenceman P.K. Subban.

Toronto opened the second half with an impressive 81-yard, two play scoring drive. After Tori Gurley's 45-yard catch, Whitaker scored on a 36-yard run at 1:22 to put the Argos back ahead 23-20.

Whitaker increased Toronto's lead to 30-20 with a six-yard TD run at 4:21 just two plays after Justin Hickman blocked Brett Maher's punt. It marked the third straight game Hamilton has surrendered a blocked punt.

Lirim Hajrullahu's 30-yard field goal at 13:40 put Toronto ahead 33-20.

Zach Collaros drove Hamilton to the Toronto 11-yard line with just over five minutes to play but D.J. Heath recorded his second pick of the game and returned it to the Argos' 32-yard line.

Dan LeFevour, a former Ticat (2012-14) and Montreal Alouette (2015), won his first Toronto start and earned his first CFL victory since 2014. He completed 27-of-36 passes for 329 yards and a TD with two interceptions in replacing veteran Ricky Ray (fractured rib), who was injured Monday.

Collaros threw his 15th TD pass in five games since coming off the injured list on Aug. 13 but was also intercepted three times. Hamilton fell to 2-3 with Collaros under centre.

Gurley had Toronto's other touchdown. Hajrullahu booted three converts and four field goals.

Jeremiah Masoli and Terrance Toliver scored Hamilton's touchdowns. Maher kicked two converts, two field goals and a single.

Hajrullahu's 15-yard field goal as time expired cut Hamilton's half-time lead to 20-16 after Kenny Shaw couldn't hold onto a sure TD strike from LeFevour, who was 18-of-23 passing for 200 yards. But the Ticats converted two LeFevour interceptions into 10 points and outscored Toronto 20-6 in the second quarter.

Maher's 51-yard field goal at 10:49 was set up by Adrian Tracy's pick. Masoli put Hamilton ahead 17-13 with a one-yard TD run at 12:02 three plays after Larry Dean's interception put the Ticats at Toronto's eight-yard line.

Maher's 28-yard field goal at 13:40 gave Hamilton a 20-13 lead at 13:40, set up by Brandon Banks' 41-yard punt return.

Collaros was just 8-of-18 passing for 113 yards but had a 14-yard touchdown pass to Toliver at 5:45.

LeFevour was sharp early, his 15-yard TD pass to Gurley at 5:13 of the first capping a smart 71-yard, seven-play march. Hajrullahu made it 10-0 with a 36-yard boot at 11:50 before connecting from 24 yards out at 3:34 of the second following Heath's first interception.
