OTTAWA - Rory MacDonald is leaving UFC Ottawa with more than just a loss to get over, as he also suffered a broken nose in his unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Stephen Thompson.

The injury occurred in the final round of the bout and caused blood to once again cover the face of the Canadian, like it did when he suffered the same injury in his last fight, a fifth round TKO set back to welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

"Fifth round, during a trade, we were both trading a little bit," said MacDonald.  "I don't know what it was, I was just trying to throw combinations and tuck my head, but something landed and the waterfall started, the familiar feeling."

"I broke it actually a couple times before this fight. I have no idea what to do. I gave it time, it kept breaking. I don't know if surgery's going to be the best route. I really just have to take time and at least I'd probably look into surgery, see if that can make it stronger, because just time off didn't do (anything)."

Prior to the fight, MacDonald had expressed interest in fighting on the recently announced UFC Vancouver card in August, but those plans are out the window now as the 26-year old  has to get his nose repaired.

"My nose needs surgery," said MacDonald. "I'm going to need some time."

While he did go on to suffer the loss in the fight after breaking his nose, MacDonald is taking positives from how he pressed on through the injury.

"When my nose busted and I was taking those hard shots that voice in my head was telling me 'OK, go down' like I did in the Robbie fight," said MacDonald.  "But this time I was like, relax, take a breath, you're still in this.  I think that was a good thing that I had a little more composure."

MacDonald was forced to take several months off to heal from the broken nose he suffered at UFC 189.
