SEATTLE - The Mariners and outfielder Leonys Martin have agreed to a $4.15 million contract for the 2016 season and avoided salary arbitration.
Seattle announced the agreement Thursday.
Left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and right-hander Evan Scribner also filed for arbitration. Players and teams are scheduled to swap proposed salaries on Friday.
Martin was acquired from Texas during Seattle's busy off-season makeover with the idea that he will be in a rotation among the Mariners' starting outfielders. Martin is coming off a down year at the plate with Texas, where he hit .219 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 25 RBIs in 95 games last season.
Martin signed a $15.5 million, five-year contract with the Rangers in May 2011 that included a $5 million signing bonus. It was one of the largest contracts for a Cuban defector at the time, before deals for players like Jose Abreu and Yoenis Cespedes.
