Price eyeing St. Louis?

The St. Louis Cardinals could be the front runner in the race to sign free-agent lefty David Price. USA Today Sports MLB columnist Bob Nightengale had some interesting things to say during a segment on the MLB Network Thursday.

“I think he ends up with the St. Louis Cardinals.  I think it’s his number one choice, it’s certainly the Cardinals number one choice. He lives in Nashville.  Remember a year ago, when he was with Tampa, he came and watched a game in the stands in St. Louis and absolutely loved it.  I think it’s a perfect fit.”

The Toronto Blue Jays might also be in the running to bring back Price's services, but he could be too expensive for the organization that will reportedly have a budget of $140 million in 2016

Nightengale says the Chicago Cubs, another team reportedly interested in the 30-year-old, will likely bow out at some point.

“I think that the Cubs are going to go smaller in this process. They just paid $155 million on Jon Lester.  Do they really want $350 million on two guys? I think they go steal John Lackey from the Cardinals, give him a two-year deal, and then maybe grab (Jordan) Zimmerman. Get two pitchers for the price of one.”

Cards looking at Zobrist?

The Cardinals are in the market for second baseman/utility infielder Ben ZobristZobrist, who is coming off a World Series victory in his one and only year with the Kansas City Royals, is a free-agent. The nine-year veteran is coming off a four-year, $18 million contract. Zobrist, 34, hit .276 with 13 home runs and 56 RBIs over 126 games with the Royals in 2015. He hit .303 with two homers and six RBIs in a strong postseason.

Yankees want Chen

The New York Yankees are very interested in free-agent lefty Wei-Yin Chen, according to the New York Daily News. David Price is the most coveted left-handed on the winter's free-agent market, but the Yanks could get Chen for a much cheaper price.

“A lot of teams are going to be in on him,” the source told the New York Daily News. “But the Yankees are going to be one of them.”

Chen is reportedly looking for a deal worth at least five years.

The 30-year-old has pitched his entire four-year career in Baltimore and posted a 11-8 record with a 3.34 ERA and 153 strikeouts in 2015.
