Cream of the crop

Daisuke Matsuzaka
2006 Team: Seibu Lions
Age: 26
2007 Team: Boston Red Sox (6-years, $52 million)
Notes: The Boston Red Sox won the right to negotiate with the 26-year old with a bid of $51.1 million. It remains to be seen how much will be needed to sign him. He throws a mid-90's fastball and a slider, but when the price of the winning bid is considered, he'll be very expensive.

Barry Zito
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 82.78
2006 Team: Oakland Athletics
Age: 28
2007 Team: San Francisco Giants (7-years, $126 million)
Notes: You can call him 'Captain Hook' because of that dynamite curve but the days when he can't find it become very long. The lefty has been lucky over his career as far as injuries go and will give a team well over 200 innings. Not sure if his west coast style will fit in with the big money clubs but his agent Scott Boras will be looking east and seeing dollar signs.

Jason Schmidt
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 85.20
2006 Team: San Francisco Giants
Age: 33
2007 Team: Los Angeles Dodgers (3-years, $47 million)
Notes: Solid slider, a formidable change and he can bring the heat. Injuries have been a concern for the big fella over the years but he has managed to toss over 200 innings in three of the last four seasons.

Andy Pettitte
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 77.39
2006 Team: Houston Astros
Age: 34
2007 Team: New York Yankees (1-year, $16 million)
Notes: He's had some injury concerns in the past and his tendency to pitch through pain, while admirable, can get him into trouble. A real competitor on the hill who has crafted a 14-9 career mark in the playoffs. Is reportedly considering retirement.

Roger Clemens
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 101.37
2006 Team: Houston Astros
Age: 44
2007 Team:
Notes: Interesting case here. The old man can still get it done but is the desire to come back, even for a brief stint, there? If he wants another go it'll be down to a precious few clubs most likely the Texas and New York teams plus the sentimental bet in Boston. With pitching at such a premium half the Rocket is still a mouth watering possibility.

Greg Maddux
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 79.81
2006 Team: Los Angeles Dodgers
Age: 40
2007 Team: San Diego Padres (1-year, $10 million)
Notes: He doesn't throw hard but he is one of the smartest guys ever to take the hill. He is interested in coming back and that change can still make hitters look silly but logic should keep him in the National League. His season win/loss records have been much closer to .500 than in the early part of the decade but the inning totals are still strong.

Mark Mulder
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 45.38
2006 Team: St. Louis Cardinals
Age: 29
2007 Team: St . Louis Cardinals (2 year, $13 million)
Notes: Another interesting potential signing. The big lefty had troubles this season but turns out a rotator cuff was to blame. He had surgery in September and while early word is his off-season program will follow its usual pattern some clubs may be cautious. He's only 29 so the chances for a full recovery are pretty good.

Ted Lilly
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 76.18
2006 Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Age: 30
2007 Team: Chicago Cubs (4-years, $40 million)
Notes: The troubles with John Gibbons in Toronto are well documented and a return to the Jays seems unlikely. He put up decent numbers this season and as a solid middle of the rotation lefty he will draw interest from several clubs.

Tom Glavine
2006 TSN.ca Rating:
2006 Team: New York Mets
Age: 40
2007 Team: New York Mets (1-year, $10.5-million)
Notes: After both he and the Mets declined their respective options for 2007, Glavine became a free agent. It is widely known that Glavine is 50-50 between returning the Mets or heading back to the Atlanta Braves where he started his career. He's still an effective pitcher and is only 10 wins away from 300 for his career.
