Toronto Raptors Draft History

1995

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
7 (1) Damon Stoudamire G 5'10 171 Arizona
35 (2) Jimmy King G 6-5 210 Michigan
At the Time: The crowd in Toronto was screaming for Ed O'Bannon, but Isiah Thomas wanted a point guard to build his new team around. Stoudamire was picked just ahead of Shawn Respert, O'Bannon, Kurt Thomas and Gary Trent.
Looking Back: A good pick by the Raptors, Stoudamire played xx seasons for the club and was their first star.

1996

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
2 (1) Marcus Camby C 5'10 171 Massachusetts
At the Time: The debate was between Camby and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Camby was coming off a fantastic collegiate career and was the safer pick. The Raptors actually won the draft lottery that year, but rules were in place that wouldn't allow Toronto or Vancouver to get the first pick. Allen Iverson was chosen first overall. Camby was picked just ahead of Abdur-Rahim, Stephon Marbury, Ray Allen and Antoine Walker.
Looking Back: Although it took Camby time to develop he became has outlasted his entire draft year save for Ray Allen.

1997

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
9 (1) Tracy McGrady G/F 6'8 210 Mount Zion Academy (HS)
At the Time: Isiah Thomas said McGrady was the second best player in the draft behind Tim Duncan and was thrilled to get him with the ninth pick. McGrady was picked just ahead of Danny Fortson, Olivier Saint-Jean, Austin Croshere and Derek Anderson.

1998

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
4 (1) Antawn Jamison F 6'8 223 North Carolina
47 (2) Tyson Wheeler G 6-5 210 Rhode Island
At the Time: The Raptors wanted Vince Carter and they knew the Golden State Warriors wanted Jamison so they drafted Jamison and traded him for Carter and cash. Carter was picked just ahead of Robert Traylor, Jason Williams, Larry Hughes and Dirk Nowitzki.
Looking Back:

1999

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
5 (1) Jonathan Bender F 6'11 202 Picayune Memorial (HS)
12 (1) Aleksander Radojevic C 7-3 250 Barton County CC
At the Time: The Raptors chose Bender because they had a deal with the Indiana Pacers that saw Antonio Davis land in Toronto. Bender was picked just ahead of Wally Szczerbiak, Richard Hamilton, Andre Miller and Shawn Marion.
Looking Back: The Raptors needed a veteran big man to add some toughness to their squad and Davis was a solid player for xx year. He also made his lone All-Star game appearance as a Raptor. Still, a few of those players taken after Bender would have been nice addition. Radojevic was drafted because he was big (7-3), but a bad back limited him to just three games with the Raptors. He was picked just ahead of Corey Maggette, William Avery, Frederick Weis and Ron Artest.

2000

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
21 (1) Morris Peterson G/F 5'10 171 Michigan State
46 (2) DeeAndre Hulett G 6-5 210 College of the Sequoias
At the Time: The Raptors were probably just looking for the best available player here and Peterson was an absolute gift. He was just coming off an NCAA championship and this pick was really a no-brainer. Peterson was picked just ahead of Donnell Harvey, DeShawn Stevenson, Dalibor Bagaric and Jake Tsakalidis.
Looking Back: Not only did teh Raptors get great value for their pick in Mo-Pete, he also went on to become one of th emost beloved Raptors in franchise history.

2001

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
17 (1) Michael Bradley F 5'10 171 Villanova
At the Time: Coming out of college Bradley actually looked like an NBA talent. He was big and could shoot the ball well. Bradley was picked just ahead of Jason Collins, Zach Randolph, Brendan Haywood and Joseph Forte.
Looking Back:

2002

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
20 (1) Kareem Rush G 5'10 171 Missouri
At the Time: The sharp-shooting Rush was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers along with Tracy Murray for Linsdey Hunter and Chris Jefferies (27th pick). Hunter was a veteran point guard who could still play, while Jefferies was a shut-down defender in college (Fresno State). Rush was picked just ahead of Qyntel Woods, Casey Jacobsen, Tayshaun Prince and Nenad Krstic.
Looking Back: Unfortunately Jefferies' skills didn't translate to the NBA.

2003

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
4 (1) Chris Bosh F 6'10 171 Georgia Tech
52 (2) Remon Van de Hare F 6-5 210 Netherlands
At the Time: This was thought to be a three-player draft (LeBron James, Darko Milicic and Carmelo Anthony), and unfortunately for the Raptors they had the fourth pick. They still had a tough decision to make though as there was actually . Bosh played one year at Georgia Tech and the Kevin Garnett comparisons started to pop up. Bosh was picked just ahead of Dwyane Wade, Chris Kaman, Kirk Hinrich and T.J. Ford.
Looking Back: Yes it would ahve been nice to have had Wade as a Raptor, however Bosh was definitely a defensible pick. He was a never a superstar and the city never fully embraced him, but he was a very good player for eight seasons in Toronto. He helped the team to its first division title in 2007 and holds many franchise records including points scored, blocks and rebounds. Now he's playing with both James and Wade in Miami and has a championship ring on his finger.

2004

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
8 (1) Rafael Araujo C 5'10 171 Brigham Young
39 (2) Albert Miralles F 6-5 210 Spain
At the Time: This pick made no sense at all. There was no defensible reason for this pick even then. So why did they do it? The answer is a common one for NBA picks - he was big. Araujo was nearly seven feet tall and weighed 280 pounds coming out of college and was much stronger than just about everybody he played against. But stronger did not mean better. Defence was a big concern in college and that didn't get much better in the NBA. Araujo was picked just ahead of Andre Iguodala, Luke Jackson, Andris Biedrins and Robert Swift. Miralles traded to Miami for Pape Sow.

2005

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
7 (1) Charlie Villanueva F 5'10 171 Connecticut
16 (1) Joey Graham F 6-5 210 Oklahoma
41 (2) Roko Ukic G     Croatia
58 (2) Uros Slokar F     Slovenia
At the Time: And for the second straight year, all of the analysts at the draft were stunned. There were probably four players left on the board that nobody would have batted an eye had they chosen. But the Raptors went with Villanueva who just happed to play the same position as their best player - Chris Bosh. Rob Babcock, however, thought Villanueva was the best player left regardless of position. Villanueva was picked just ahead of Channing Frye, Ike Diogu, Andrew Bynum and Fran Vazquez.

2006

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
1 (1) Andrea Bargnani F 7'00 250 Italy
35 (2) P.J. Tucker G 6-5 210 Enloe H.S.
At the Time: New Raptors head honcho Bryan Colangelo had been eying Bargnani for quite a while and he proved too difficult to pass up. There were about six players who the Raptors could have taken, but Bargnani's ceiling seemed highest. Bargnani was picked just ahead of LaMarcus Aldridge, Adam Morrison, Tyrus Thomas and Shelden Williams.
Looking Back:

2007

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
No Selections
At the Time: Toronto had no picks of their own having forfeited their first round pick to Charlotte, via Cleveland, in order to complete Lamond Murry trade in 2002. However, the Raptors acquired the draft rights to 58th pick Giorgos Printezis from San Antonio in exchange for a 2008 second-round draft pick.
Looking Back:

2008

Pick (round) Player Pos Height Weight School
17 (1) Roy Hibbert C 5'10 171 Georgetown
At the Time: The Raptors made this pick on behalf of the Indiana Pacers as part of the T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic-for-Jermaine O'Neal trade. Two of the Raptors' biggest weaknesses in 2007-08 was a soft interior defence and an inability to rebound, particularly on the defensive end. When healthy, O'Neal is one of the better defensive big man in the Association and he should shore up the middle and provide solid rebouding on both ends of the floor. The Raptors also received the Pacers second round pick, 41st overall, Nathan Jawai as part of the trade.
