Cream of the crop

Gregg Zaun
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 85.68
2006 Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Age: 35
2007 Team: Toronto Blue Jays (2-years, $7.25 million)
Notes: Wasn't happy when the Jays added Molina and wanted more playing time. Has a reputation as a first half hitter. Good defensive backstop who is adept at handling a pitching staff.

AB R HR RBI OBP AVG

Benjie Molina
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 82.68
2006 Team: Toronto Blue Jays
Age: 32
2007 Team: San Francisco Giants (3-years, $16 million)
Notes: Same as Zaun in that he was not happy with the platoon system employed by the Jays. He's got a live bat but has rally killing speed out of the box and on the bases. Strong skills behind the plate.

AB R HR RBI OBP AVG
433 44 19 57 .319 .284

Mike Piazza
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 84.80
2006 Teams: San Diego Padres
Age: 38
2007 Team: Oakland Athletics (1-year, $8.5 million)
Notes: Still has power but is only a shell of the hitter he was in the late 1990's. Wear and tear has mounted up over the years and he has trouble staying in the line-up. He was never a great defender and age isn't helping things. Long speculated that a move to a DH spot in the AL would give his career a boost.

AB R HR RBI OBP AVG
399 39 22 68 .342 .283

Mike Lieberthal
2006 TSN.ca Rating: 83.27
2006 Team: Philadelphia Phillies
Age: 34
2007 Team: Los Angeles Dodgers (1-year deal)
Notes: Knee, hip and back injuries kept him on the DL last season. He is still a solid defender and calls a good game, when he's healthy. Similar to Piazza in that his long career behind the plate should make teams uneasy.

AB R HR RBI OBP AVG
209 22 9 36 .316 .273
