SERIES NOTES

Best-of-Five series to advance to the National League Championship Series.

The Pirates won their 2013 season series against the Cardinals 10-9. This is the first ever post-season meeting between the Pirates and Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals captured their first division title since 2009, finishing with a league-best 97-65 mark.

The Cardinals are making their third straight appearance in the Division Series, two years ago they beat the Philadelphia Phillies and last season the Washington Nationals, both times in five games.

The strength of the Cardinals offence is their balanced attack, Carlos Beltran led the team with 24 home runs and Matt Holliday was right behind him swatting 22.

As far as run production is concerned, Beltran, Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina all topped the 80 RBI mark.

Adam Wainwright with 19 wins and Lance Lynn with 15, lead the pitching staff into the series coming off strong regular season performances.

Wainwright has also been a strong post-season performer with the Cardinals having been used both as a starter and a closer during his time with the team.

Contrasting all of the playoff experience of the Cardinals are the Pirates who last made the post-season in 1992, before the addition of the division series round.

While they have other players that can do damage offensively, Andrew McCutchen is the driving force behind the Pirates attack.

In 157 games this season he finished with a .317 average 21 home runs, 84 RBI, 27 stolen bases, a .404 on-base percentage and .508 slugging percentage and is in the mix to be named the National League's most valuable player.

Third baseman Pedro Alvarez will also be expected to supply some power as he tied for the NL lead with 36 home runs and drove in 100 RBI, but was only able to muster a .233 average.

Francisco Liriano is the ace of the pitching staff and posted a 16-8 record and 3.02 ERA, but he was forced into duty during the Wild Card game and will only be a factor towards the end of the series.

SERIES NOTES

Best-of-Five series to advance to the National League Championship Series.

The Braves won their 2013 season series against the Dodgers 5-2. These two teams have met on just one prior occasion in their entire history (including the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston and Milwaukee Braves), with the Braves winning the 1996 NLDS 3-0.

The Atlanta Braves are making their first division series appearance since 2010, when they were eliminated in four games by the San Francisco Giants.

Five Braves hitters topped the 20 home run mark this season led by Justin Upton with 27, Freddie Freeman, Dan Uggla, Evan Gattis and Brian McCann also reached the plateau.

Jason Heyward played in 104 games this season as he dealt with some injuries but is now back in the lineup, hitting out of the leadoff position where he supplies power.

He has also been a threat to get on base with a slash line of .322/.403/.551 since topping the order.

Kris Medlen is the leader of the Braves' pitching staff and posted a 15-12 record and 3.11 ERA.

A strong bullpen also helped the Braves nail down wins, anchored by Craig Kimbrel who pinned down 50 of his 54 save opportunities with a stellar 1.21 ERA.

The Dodgers on the other hand not only have a staff ace in Clayton Kershaw, but one of the best pitchers in the game.

Kershaw went 16-9 during the regular season with a 1.83 ERA and was backed up by Zack Greinke who added a 15-4 record and 2.63 ERA to the Dodgers cause.

All eyes will also be on young superstar Yasiel Puig who will be making his playoff debut coming off a season where he hit 19 homers and had 42 RBIs in 104 games.

The Dodgers will have to overcome losing Matt Kemp and having to play with an injured Andre Ethier, two players that were key to their success this season.

Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis threw out the highest percentage of would-be base-stealers out of backstops that played a minimum of 75 games, helping his team control the running game.

Dodger closer Kenley Jansen has also been great since taking over the job from a struggling Brandon League. He converted 28 saves in 32 chances.
