Red Sox win Best-of-Seven series 4-2

SERIES NOTES

Best-Of-Seven series to advance to the World Series.

The Boston Red Sox enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in their first season under new manager John Farrell.

After finishing the 2012 season last in the AL East with a 69-93 record (their lowest win total in a non-shortened season in almost half a century!) the Sox pulled a 180 this year, easily winning the East with a 97-win campaign.

The Sox handled the Tampa Bay Rays pretty effectively in the Division Series, taking the best-of-five in four games with the lone Rays' win coming off a Jose Lobaton walk-off shot. The win marked their first series victory since claiming the 2008 ALDS and just their second since claiming the 2007 World Series.

Boston came into the ALCS well rested at the very least, having enjoyed three nights off between their Game 4 clinch and Game 1 at Fenway.

The Tigers won the AL Central for the third straight season on the back of another standout year from Miguel Cabrera and elite pitching, this time anchored by Max Scherzer instead of Justin Verlander.

Oakland looked to have the Tigers on the ropes in the ALDS with a 2-1 advantage, but the Tigers used possibly their greatest assets to dig themselves out of the hole. They went to Scherzer and then Verlander to win games 4 and 5 - the latter tossing six no-hit innings in an eight-inning shutout victory in the clincher.

Miguel Cabrera - believed to be playing through injury - was also a difference-maker in the ALDS clincher, hitting a game-changing two-run homer in the fourth.

The Tigers have done progressively better since 2011’s ALCS loss to the Texas Rangers, but there’s only one way to improve on 2012 and that’s by winning it all.

The Tigers won their 2013 season series against the Red Sox 4-3. There is no prior post-season history between these two teams.
