Red Sox win World Series 4-2

The Boston Red Sox have won their third World Series in 10 seasons, beating the St. Louis Cardinals in six games.

The Red Sox repeated their performance from the 2004 World Series that saw them break the Curse of the Bambino with a victory over the Cardinals.

Boston clinched the Series at Fenway Park for the first time since 1918.

The Sox enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in their first season under new manager John Farrell, a season charged with emotion after the Marathon bombings shook the city to its core in April.

After finishing the 2012 season last in the AL East with a 69-93 record (their lowest win total in a non-shortened season in almost half a century!) the Sox pulled a 180 this year, easily winning the East with a 97-win campaign.

The Sox handled the Tampa Bay Rays pretty effectively in the Division Series, taking the best-of-five in four games with the lone Rays' win coming off a Jose Lobaton walk-off shot. The win marked their first series victory since claiming the 2008 ALDS and just their second since claiming the 2007 World Series.

They would build on that with an ALCS victory that turned on a Game 2 grand slam by David Ortiz. After nearly getting no-hit in Game 1 and trailing Game 2 late, Ortiz connected to swing Game 2 Boston's way and took the series momentum with it. John Lackey would outduel Justin Verlander in Game 3 and the Sox would go on to take the series in six games.

The Cardinals and Red Sox had met on three prior occasions in World Series history with the Cardinals winning two of three meetings: 1946 (4-3 STL), 1967 (4-3 STL) and 2004 (4-0 BOS).
