MLB Free Agent Tracker
Free Agent Compensation:
Teams losing top free agents, as defined by a complicated statistical formula, get draft picks next June as compensation .
Type A free agents are among the top 20 per cent of players at their position, as defined by the formula created in the 1981 strike settlement, and Type B are from 21-40 per cent.
If a team signs a Type-A free agent, they send either a first or second round pick (depending where they finished in 2010 - the first 15 picks are protected) to the player's old team. that club also receives a pick from the league inbetween the first and second round. If a Type-B player is signed, his old club only receives the sandwich pick from the league.
The Type A free agents are: Grant Balfour, Adrian Beltre, Carl Crawford, Jorge De La Rosa, Scott Downs, Adam Dunn, Frank Francisco, Jason Frasor, Paul Konerko, Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez, Carl Pavano, Rafael Sorianoand Jayson Werth.
